The peaceful island of Menorca, the second largest in the Balearic Islands, cultivates a respect for the environment and sustainable development rivalled by few other tourist destinations. This is why it was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993. The natural wealth and preservation of its landscapes and its inviting coves with their crystalline waters coexist to perfection with a leisure and tourism offering that integrates with its idyllic natural setting. Menorca also offers visitors a wealth of prehistoric remains to discover, such as talayots and navetas, as well as a range of cultural events and festive highlights such as those venerating the horse, including the popular Sant Joan festival. The highlights of local cuisine include cheeses and lobster stew. The island is flanked on the east and west by its two main cities: Mahon, the administrative capital with its essence of a bygone English era and charming harbour area, and Ciutadella, the former capital of the island and aristocratic home of two 19th century palaces
