Chichén Itzá, declared one of the "Seven New Wonders of the World", was the capital of the ancient Mayan empire. The multiple monumental buildings of the great expanse of Chichén Itzá are overlooked by the Pyramid of Kukulcán, called "the Castle" by many, one of the most remarkable buildings of Mayan architecture. It is a four-sided pyramid, characterised by its seemingly endless 91 steps and huge feathered serpent heads, effigies of the god Kukulcán.
The Temple of the Warriors, the circular observatory known as El Caracol and El Juego de la Pelota are other buildings that can be visited, representing the greatness of one of history's most developed civilisations.
