Holbox Island, meaning "Black Hole" in Mayan, is located northeast of Cancun and is 42 km long and 2 km wide. It is separated from the mainland by the Yalahau Lagoon and has 36 miles of pristine beaches of fine coral sand.
It is regarded as an area of high ecological value where you can easily see whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, lobsters, octopus, eagle rays and sea turtles, as well as 150 species of birds and reptiles.
During the months of June and September, you can observe the largest gathering of whale sharks, some reaching up to 15 metres long. They are quite docile, so you can swim next to these giants for an unforgettable experience.
